A new delivery service of fresh products arrives at Portuguese homes through DPD Fresh

Press release 2 October 2023

  • DPD Fresh is launched in Portugal to bring fresh food and drinks to the homes of Portuguese people;
  • New service is now available in October across the country
  • With deliveries the morning after collection, it is the fastest nationwide service available in Portugal

DPD Portugal, a leading company in the domestic express transport market, has just announced the launch in Portugal of DPD Fresh, its latest temperature-controlled delivery service for fresh products. After the success of the offer in Spain, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Italy and Lithuania and as part of a process of expansion throughout Europe, the new service is now available throughout the Portuguese mainland. It responds, on the one hand, to the growing consumer demand for home delivery of their favorite food products and, on the other, to the need to improve the supply chain between producers and stockists and retailers of this type of products (Horeca channel and specialized stores).

According to an annual analysis carried out by DPD, currently 71% of regular e-shoppers (online consumers) buy ready-to-eat hot and cold foods, and 46% buy ready-to-cook meals. In addition to this, there is also an evolution in the habits of the Portuguese to consume locally sourced, healthy, dietary, vegan or organic products, while at the same time being concerned with sustainability.

To respond to this trend, DPD now brings to Portugal a transport solution in a controlled temperature environment (between 0° and 4°C), for professionals and the end consumer, which ensures the delivery of fresh products on the morning of the day following the dispatch of the order, throughout the continental territory. These are specialized logistics solutions that Geopost has already implemented in several countries (Chronofresh in France, SEUR Frio in Spain and DPD Fresh in Italy, Benelux and Lithuania) with a consolidated turnover of €90 million in 2022 and strong annual growth of 41%.

More specifically, DPD Portugal invested in strengthening its infrastructure, which now has professional solutions to guarantee the cold chain from collection to delivery of the order, including its linehauls and logistics platforms, all equipped with cold rooms. DPD Fresh also ensures temperature control of products transported throughout the chain in the range of 0º to 4º in order to preserve their quality and properties.

This service is also innovative from a technological point of view, as it includes recording the temperature at the time of delivery and making it available on proof of delivery, through the equipment of DPD Drivers, a very useful process for the professional segment.

DPD Fresh was designed to support producers and distributors to market their products, but also to guarantee the delivery of the freshest food to the Portuguese. As such, the carrier's new delivery option could be useful for businesses, such as grocery stores or restaurants, but also for the end consumer, being able to order fresh products and have them at their doorstep the next morning, 6 days a week.

Olivier Establet, CEO of DPD Portugal, is pleased with this new development from the company:

“We sought, once again, to respond to the needs of our customers, which is why we could not fail to bring to the Portuguese market a service as relevant as DPD Fresh, a professional solution that complies with all legal requirements and adopts the best national and international practices to offer a unique service in Portugal for the transport of fresh products. We are hopeful that this offer will be well received by the market, as both brands and consumers are increasingly aware of the choice of healthier food products (especially organic and local products), as well as the impact that your food choices have on the environment. It is our conviction that the launch of DPD Fresh for fresh products is only comparable to what happened 30 years ago with the express transport of non-food orders, which brought a different level of service compared to the available solutions, which were limited at the time. to its own fleet or to a more traditional carrier with longer delivery times”.

With DPD Fresh, DPD aims to become a leader in temperature-controlled parcel transport.
