DPD CZ deploys new self-service lockers across the Czech Republic
Press release 28 June 2023
DPD CZ, part of Europe's largest parcel delivery network Geopost, is gradually deploying new self-service lockers across the Czech Republic. This will expand the existing network of 3,200 Pickup points and lockers. The first of this year's 250 will be operational during the summer holidays, just as the Czech Post is closing 300 of its branches for good. In most cases, the new DPD Pickup Boxes will be located in the vicinity of the locations where customers are used to going to the post office.
The largest e-commerce survey in the world, Geopost‘s E-shopper barometer, shows that the Czech customer is very specific in terms of the choice of delivery location, in addition to the popularity of cash on delivery. While in the Czech Republic the post office holds the 3rd place and last year over 36% of e-shoppers had their packages delivered via the post office, in Europe the average is only 15%. This means that the need to use the post office is significantly lower in most of Europe than in the Czech Republic, and in countries such as Poland, Italy, the UK or Austria, it is even only between 9-15%. Just behind the post office, self-service lockers are favoured by 26% of customers, up 5% year-on-year (2022 vs. 2021). DPD CZ expects their usage to continue to grow.
"Post office is such a familiar thing in the Czech Republic that some people cannot imagine functioning without it. However, we would like to show them that if they want to have a parcel sent from an e-shop, for example, there is an easy solution - self-service locker. There are no strict opening hours, anyone can operate it without any app in seconds, and it supports sustainable delivery thanks to solar panels and reduced courier stops. I believe that most customers in new locations will get used to it and appreciate its benefits,"
explains Miloš Malaník, DPD CZ's CEO.
The main advantages for customers, apart from the 24-hour access, include the possibility of delivering parcels up to 20 kg or picking up within 10 seconds via PIN code (the customer does not need any app). The lockers can of course also be used to deliver parcels from abroad. Most of the lockers are charged by solar panels, have very low energy consumption and their operation is therefore low-emission.
DPD Pickup Boxes will operate throughout the country near the closed branches of the post offices, and customers can find them in the immediate vicinity of large cities such as Prague, Brno or Ostrava, as well as in Pribram, Melnik, Decin or Prerov.
