DPD Lithuania Purchased 12 New Electric Vehicles This Year, Valued at 750 Thousand Euros
Press release 2 July 2024
The parcel delivery company DPD Lithuania continues to expand its fleet with the addition of 12 new electric vehicles this year. Previously, electric-powered minibuses were used exclusively for parcel delivery in Vilnius. However, starting this year, these more sustainable vehicles will also be deployed in other major cities in Lithuania, including Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys. The company will allocate over 750 thousand euros for the new electric vehicles, including the installation of charging stations.
“Last year alone, we drove over 220 thousand kilometres in electric vehicles and delivered more than 1.5 million parcels in Vilnius. With the purchase of new electric vehicles, over half of our fleet in the capital will be electric. This year, other major Lithuanian cities will also benefit from these sustainable vehicles. We now have 72 electric vehicles in our fleet. This significant step demonstrates our commitment to our long-term goal of decarbonising transport, aiming to electrify the entire fleet by 2035,"
says Markas Ąžuolas, Sustainability Manager at DPD Lithuania.
Parcels to Be Delivery by Electric Vehicles Beyond the Capital
The new electric vehicles hit the streets in May. According to M. Ąžuolas, this year’s development is exceptional – the new vehicles will be used to deliver parcels not only in Vilnius but also in other cities.
“Our data shows that over the two years of operating electric vehicles, CO2 emissions have decreased by over 500 tons. This achievement supports DPD Lithuania’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions by 90 percent by 2040. For the remaining emissions that are difficult to eliminate, we will invest in projects that mitigate environmental impact.”
According to him, the new electric vehicles will enable further reductions in CO2 emissions. It is estimated that an average of 330 tons fewer pollutants will be emitted into the environment each year compared to previous years.
New Electric Vehicle Batteries Will Last Longer, Allowing Couriers to Travel Further
DPD Lithuania purchased its first electric vehicles in 2021, initially adding Volkswagen E-Crafter vehicles to the company’s fleet. This year, the majority of new electric minibuses are Ford L4H3 and Ford L3H3 models.
“Over the past year, we encountered specific challenges, especially during the cold seasons, when a significant portion of the vehicle’s electricity was used for heating. As a result, we were able to travel fewer kilometres per charge. The new Ford electric vehicles are equipped with larger capacity batteries, enabling greater travel distances in both summer and winter. We are planning additional sustainable initiatives in the near future,”
asserts M. Ąžuolas.
