DPD Netherlands and DPD Belux invest €250 million in expansion of Benelux sorting capacity

Press release 13 October 2023

As an international hub for trade and logistics, the Benelux plays an important role in transport. DPD has therefore invested over €250 million in expanding and improving its hubs and depots in the Benelux. This will result in a significant increase in capacity to 750,000 parcels per day. DPD also continues to invest in growing the number of European network connections from the Benelux with higher delivery reliability. In doing so, DPD is strengthening its position as the market leader in international parcel transport by road and responding to changing customer needs.

Erik Uljee, CEO DPD Netherlands & Richard de Haas, CEO DPD Belgium and Luxembourg:

"DPD works together closely within the Benelux and is ready for the future"

DPD's three sorting hubs in the Benelux - the logistics centres where parcels are collected and sorted - are located in Eindhoven, Veenendaal and Brussels. Despite the fact that the centres in Eindhoven and Brussels opened not long ago and Veenendaal was completely modernised this year, DPD continues to invest in these locations. For example, DPD has introduced state-of-the-art artificial intelligence for parcel recognition, which allows for faster and more accurate work.

Expansion of DPD's international network

DPD, part of Geopost, is the market leader in parcel transport by road in Europe. As the modern hubs in the Benelux form part of the unique international Geopost network with own operations in 21 European countries, DPD customers have the convenience of dealing with one reliable partner from pick-up to delivery.

Erik Uljee, CEO DPD Netherlands:

"By investing in our sorting locations but also in new depots in Amsterdam, Brussels, Goes and Maastricht, our network has expanded to three hubs and twenty depots in the Benelux. We are proud of this position and keep moving forward. We have therefore worked hard throughout the Benelux to increase sorting capacity and connections with Europe and the rest of the world. This leads to reliable delivery times to more destinations."

Richard de Haas, CEO DPD Belux:

"From the Benelux, next business day delivery to much of Europe is already standard in a range of about 700 kilometres from the Benelux. We also see that the current economic conditions increase customer demand for predictable and cheaper shipping within Europe compared to classic express transport."

Benelux market and network of parcel shops and lockers as alternative increasingly important

The revamped three-hub strategy enables DPD to align deliveries within the Benelux even more efficiently. This allows DPD to offer a reliable door-to-door service in the Benelux to customers. The depots now further allow sorting of parcels delivered or collected from DPD parcel shops and lockers. This enables DPD to respond well to increasing market demand for flexible delivery options. The investments allow DPD customers to deliver parcels faster with more options for parcel recipients; both in the Benelux and in Europe where Geopost has the largest network of parcel shops and lockers in the market, totaling more than 100,000 locations.

Sustainability impact

DPD's mission is to be net zero by 2040, and to do so it aims to further reduce its carbon footprint every year. This is 10 years earlier than required under the climate agreement. These plans have been endorsed by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). Part of the investments have included providing both hubs and depots with charging infrastructure for the fleet of electric vehicles that will continue to expand in the coming years.
