La Poste group rolls out electric HGV services in France

Press release 10 July 2023

Colissimo, Chronopost and DPD France, pioneers in last-mile delivery using electric vehicles, are now working on reducing the carbon footprint of medium- and long-haul transport. Since spring, La Poste group has been using electric HGVs for its first services in France.

Colissimo uses two electric HGVs for deliveries to the centre of Paris

Since spring, Colissimo, accompanied by Viapost - a subsidiary of La Poste with expertise in heavy goods transport - has been using two electric HGVs to deliver its parcels to the centre of Paris, thereby completely reducing the carbon footprint of its services, from the sorting platform to the end customer.

The services, which were launched in April 2023, are operated by electric vehicles belonging to Viapost's partner haulier, Chalavan & Duc. They will cover a daily route from the Pantin sorting centre to the Louvre and Mouffetard urban logistics centres. Nearly 40,000 km per year will be carbon-free thanks to this switch to electric transport.

These first electric services in the Île-de-France region are a further step in La Poste's drive to reduce the carbon footprint of its transport, following the opening of services to Lyon Corbas. By the end of 2023, more than a dozen electric HGVs will cover the region, on medium-distance routes (250-400 km). In addition, 130 biogas-powered trucks, managed by Viapost, are already transporting parcels delivered by Colissimo.

Other projects, which are key to stepping up the use of alternative energies, will be launched in 2023 and 2024, such as the construction of 18 biofuel or biogas refuelling stations close to La Poste's industrial sites, including 6 in the Île-de-France region.

La Poste has also made a major commitment: by 2030, as a result of the gradual conversion of road transport, 50% of the kilometres travelled by La Poste in France will be covered by low-carbon HGVs, representing an investment of €400 million.

Ile de France: Chronopost runs a regular service with an electric HGV

Tested in the spring by Chronopost, a pre-production electric HGV supplied by Volvo Trucks is now running services between the Roissy hub and the Alfortville branch.

During the test, which was carried out in real-life conditions in an urban environment that is more demanding than on a motorway route, the HGV covered almost 500 kilometres and reduced CO2 emissions by 340 kg compared with the same journey made in an internal combustion engine vehicle. The data collected, particularly in terms of range, energy consumption and charging time, has enabled Chronopost to validate the compatibility of this type of vehicle with its operational needs.

Chronopost has been investing in transforming its road vehicle fleet for a number of years now, with strong ambitions for HGVs: by 2021, 15 HGVs running on NGVs will have joined its fleet. The Chronopost fleet currently comprises no fewer than 80 low-emission HGVs, representing 6 million km/year and 200 services per day. By 2025, Chronopost aims to use low-emission means of transport for 20% of its deliveries.

DPD France tests an electric HGV in Tarn-et-Garonne

In mid-May, an electric VOLVO truck successfully completed several collections, paving the way for the promising future integration of electric HGVs within DPD France.

The electric HGV was used to transport parcels from a customer's site to the DPD France branch in Montauban.

The trial was a success, with 202 km covered and more than 30% of the battery remaining. It contributes to DPD France's objective for 2030: 50% of kilometres travelled per day on low-emission vehicles, including 10% on electric and hydrogen vehicles for the medium- and long-haul fleet.

To date, 12% of the kilometres travelled every day by the delivery fleet are by HGVs running on biofuels and natural gas.

The 70 low-emission HGVs deployed have reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 25% between the 1st quarter of 2022 and 2023.

La Poste group's low-carbon transport policy is in line with the Group's target of reducing carbon emissions by 30% by 2025, and achieving “Zero Net Emissions” by 2040. In this way, La Poste group is further consolidating its role as a leader in the energy transition.
