Pickup to install 200 connected lockers in Esso express service stations
Press release 23 May 2023
Pickup, a subsidiary of the La Poste group and the number one network of lockers and pickup points in France, is extending the number of its lockers in France - 1,000 to date - by joining the Esso network and more specifically its Esso Express service stations operated by the company Certas Energy France. This is a strategic move for Pickup, which is always looking for local solutions adapted to the daily life of e-buyers. By the end of the year, the company aims to offer 2,000 lockers throughout the country.
The current popularity of parcel delivery in France is no longer in question. They have already become a must in the out-of-home market and are highly appreciated by individuals, who find them comfortable and practical. In Europe, according to Geopost's e-shopper 2021 barometer, automatic lockers are as frequently used as retail outlets. 20% of regular European e-shoppers opt for a delivery in a locker. This delivery method has increased by 3 points in 2022, compared to 2021.
The reasons for choosing the Esso Express service stations
Esso Express automated service stations are often located on the regular routes of people who drive, so they are the perfect place to be. In addition to gas pumps, they can also offer a variety of other services, such as self-service stores and a fully automated car wash. In addition to the existing range of services, there will soon be 200 connected Pickup lockers.
While e-commerce purchases are increasing, Pickup and Certas Energy France offer their customers, through this local service, to take advantage of their visit to the station to collect their Chronopost and Colissimo parcels ordered on one of the 90,000 e-commerce sites offering the Pickup out-of-home delivery service. By sharing their daily trips, customers can save a lot of time. The fully automated Pickup lockers allow customers to pick up their e-commerce orders in seconds and with complete autonomy. With Esso Express stations open 365 days a year, 7 days a week, and 24 hours a day, customers also benefit from unparalleled flexibility, allowing them to easily fit this step into their schedule.
Which Esso Express service stations are concerned by this initial deployment?
The 200 Esso Express stations concerned are all part of the network operated by Certas Energy France. They are located throughout the country, in large cities (Lille, Marseille, Cannes, Dijon, Rouen, etc.) and medium-sized towns (Tourcoing, Voiron, Vauxbruin, Saint Pol Sur mer, etc.). The installation of lockers has already started on these sites and will continue until the summer.
"Close to home, quick, easy, secure, and competitive...The benefits provided by our lockers are totally in line with the Esso Express service station concept. There is a natural fit between our two brands! We are delighted about this partnership, which reflects the complementary nature of our services. In this way, we will provide consumers with an e-commerce delivery experience that truly fits with their lifestyle, by giving them the opportunity to incorporate parcel pickups into their daily commutes."
Maxime d'Hauteville, Chairman of Pickup
"This initiative reflects our commitment to providing our customers with the best possible products and services. We constantly listen to their feedback in order to understand their expectations and find new ways to enhance their experience in our service stations. We are convinced that the Pickup lockers installed in our stations will make our customers' lives easier. We are looking forward to the start of this new partnership with Pickup !
Laurent de Seré, Managing Director of Certas Energy
After widely deploying lockers in supermarkets and installing its first lockers in French metro and RER stations in 2021, Pickup is continuing to accelerate its locker-deployment strategy. With some 1,000 lockers installed to date, the company is aiming to put in place a total of 2,000 lockers in France by 2023. This service offer will complement the 16,000 Pickup points already in place around the country.
How does the system work in practice ?
-
The customer orders an item online, on one of the 90,000 e-commerce websites that offer the Pickup out-of-home delivery service.
-
When choosing the delivery option, the customer selects "delivery to a pickup point".
-
If a Pickup locker is available in an Esso station nearby, the customer simply selects this locker as the delivery point.
-
The customer then receives an email and/or text message with his/her personal identifiers (2 codes with 4 digits), and then has 3 days to recover his/her parcel.
-
When the customer arrives at the locker, he/she either scans his/her authentication QR code or enters his/her identifiers on the locker screen to retrieve their parcel.
