Nicolò Giacobino, e-commerce logistics lead at Vinted, a Geopost client, unveils incredible trends driving the sales platform’s success. Previously associated with thrift stores and garage sales, secondhand shopping is now more relevant and has exploded online!
Vinted’s 2024 Climate Change Impact Report finds buying secondhand on its site reduces 1.8kg of CO2 emissions. One secondhand buyer in three avoids investing in a new item. A big driver is inflation; Vinted helps support people's budgets. Secondhand buying also has a natural sustainability effect: many Vinted customers reuse packaging intended for one-time use. What’s more, 73% of them preferred pickup point delivery in 2021. Single delivery to a pickup point, instead of at home, reduces emissions by 62%!
The platform’s demographics are changing, too. Women represent over 50% of listings. Men now represent 10%, and children ⅓. This trend isn’t going anywhere; our research at Geopost shows that second hand purchasing - and its associated benefits - may outpace fast fashion someday. The delivery market is forever evolving. Like us, clients such Vinted dance on the cutting-edge of transforming behaviours.
