Sustainable "right up to the front door": DPD Germany acquires 150 eSprinters from Mercedes-Benz Vans
Press release 9 March 2022
- DPD Germany makes another important purchase in line with its corporate sustainability strategy
- Among other locations, the vehicles will be used at the depots in Hamburg, Essen and Nuremberg
- The charging infrastructure at the depots will operate entirely on green electricity from renewable sources
The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is a specialist vehicle for locally emissions-free transport along the famous "last mile". Following the successful deployment of the first vehicles as part of the ZUKUNFT.DE pilot project in Hamburg, logistics service provider DPD Germany has now added another 150 eSprinters to its fleet. This is a further step towards e-mobility and sustainability in the CEP sector, which is of growing importance especially for local emissions-free transport in conurbations.
The battery-powered electric Mercedes-Benz eSprinter is free from exhaust and noise emissions and is ideally suited to commercial use in the inner city. In these areas short, plannable delivery tours with many stops predominate. The eSprinter can show its strengths especially on tours where the proportion of parcels for private consignees is particularly high. The batteries of the eSprinter are usually charged directly at the depots. The tours are planned in such a way that additional charging is not necessary in the course of the delivery process. "Green electricity" further improves the carbon footprint of the e-vans: since the beginning of 2020 DPD has exclusively procured green electricity from renewable sources throughout Germany. The vehicles will be used at the depot locations in Hamburg, Essen and Nuremberg.
"We are very proud to be expanding our electric fleet with 150 eSprinters and actively using them in urban deliveries. For us the use of powerful e-transporters is an important component of our aim to continuously reduce our transport emissions. We are delighted to have found a supplier in Mercedes-Benz that can offer us electrically powered vehicles that combine sustainability and efficiency in equal measure,"
says Sarah Keller, Group Manager Corporate Delivery Management at DPD Germany.
Steffen Lucas, Head of Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Vans Europe & Head of Sales Vans Germany:
"With the eSprinter we have a vehicle in our portfolio that is ideally suited to the requirements of the courier, express and parcel service industry in terms of its specifications and range. I am therefore very pleased that DPD Germany has decided in favour of our eSprinter, and that from now on even more DPD drivers and their customers will be able to experience the many advantages of locally emissions-free driving with vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans."
The Mercedes-Benz eSprinter: locally emissions-free and with a large cargo space
In the model supplied to DPD Germany the eSprinter panel van, which in a high-roof version has a permissible gross weight of 3,500 kg, features a battery capacity of 47 kWh with a range of 128-158 km and a maximum payload of 849 kg. Flexibility is provided by the integrated quick-charge function, thanks to which the battery can be recharged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent within approx. 25 minutes. The cargo volume of 11 m³ can be used without restriction, as the batteries are installed in the underbody. The electric drive powers the front wheels and produces 85 kW with a torque of up to 295 Nm.
